The M60 was manufactured from 1959 until 1982 in four main editions and has also been repeatedly enhanced. Over several decades it served as the backbone of the US tank fleet and was just recently retired. Outside of NATO, it has been or is still used in more than 15 countries.

The edition displayed here is a M60A1 with additional reactive armor plates. It was used by the US Marine Corps during the Gulf War in 1991. Reactive armor plates particularly protect against bazookas and similar type weapons. The explosives inside are unsusceptible to small bore weapons fire.
