The success of the original Corvette was not what GM had hoped for, and by the mid-50s, the entire project was nearly abandoned.  Wisely, GM planners set their sights on targets such as Mercedes and Jaguar.  The Corvette acquired more sophistication, more creature comforts, and most importantly, more power.  By the end of the decade, the little Chevy was burning up the track, wowing the automotive press, and capturing the public's imagination.  The '59 model became the first to actually put the entire project in the black.
